Let's assume that each wrapper is a 5cm x 5cm square (it's actually triangular and smaller than 5cm on a side, but I'll be generous). 20,000,000 x 5cm x 5cm = 500,000,000 cm^2. Each square meter is 100cm x 100cm = 10,000 cm^2. So the total area in square meters is (500,000,000 cm^2) / (10,000 cm^2 / m^2) = 50,000 square meters. This area is equivalent to a square with a side length of 224 m. One single square mile is a square with a side length of 1,608 m. So this 224 m square is about 0.019 square miles. I told my kids and they were suprised as well. We as many families do recycle everyweek on trash day and now if someone were to look in my tub out front on the curb they will find Hershey Kiss wrappers in our tub. Just thinking about the amount (and miles!) of foil that is possibly wasted and polluting the environment is disturbing. If more people knew about this simple recycling tip, I believe we could really make in impact on the world and our environment. Great job with this very interesting and shocking bit of information!Jenn Finkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03271322444975181157noreply@blogger.com
